About

Herawati is one of the founders of the Eijkman Institute - a research institution engaged in molecular biology and medical biotechnology. Her work spans her career as a physician, scientist, and active member of various organizations, panels, as well as scientific forums at the national and international levels. Herawati's interest in genetic markers and population studies has brought her to the forefront of research, publication, and scientific development in Indonesia. She currently serves as the Chair of the Medical Science Commission at the Indonesian Academy of Sciences (AIPI). Previously, Herawati served as Head of the Forensic DNA Laboratory and Principal Researcher at the Laboratory of Genome Diversity and Disease at the Eijkman Institute. In 2008, Herawati received the Anugerah Habibie award as a figure who made a breakthrough in science. She was considered to have an important role in providing the basis for forensic DNA markers in the identification of the perpetrators of the Australian Embassy bombing in 2004. Outside of her research activities, Herawati also actively supports women to develop careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
