Survey on Public Understanding and Support for Excise Tax on Sugar-Sweetened Beverages in Packages

The increasing consumption of sugar-sweetened packaged beverages (SSBs) is one of the main risk factors for increasing the prevalence of obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Indonesia. Therefore, CISDI conducted a survey research using the online survey method to determine the level of knowledge, accessibility and public support for the plan to implement excise tax on MBDK in Indonesia. The research was conducted by involving a total of 2,605 respondents aged more than 18 years from all provinces in Indonesia. A total of 80% of respondents supported the Government's plan to implement the excise tax on MBDK and the majority of respondents (93%) agreed that the proceeds from the excise tax would be used to improve the quality of health services. Based on the public support above, CISDI encourages the Government to immediately implement the plan to impose excise tax on MBDK products.
