CISDI continues to encourage and support the government in implementing excise taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB). This policy brief discusses the development of SSB consumption in Indonesia and changes in demand for MBDK products when prices increase (elasticity).
Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) has increased every year. Analysis of the 2024 National Socioeconomic Survey (Susenas) and population data shows that approximately 63.7 million households in Indonesia consumed SSB in 2024, or around 68.1% of households. However, various studies show that excessive consumption of SSB can significantly increase the risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, dental caries, and others.
To control SSB consumption, CISDI continues to encourage and support the government in implementing excise taxes on SSB products. This policy brief discusses: 1) the development of SSB consumption in Indonesia in 2024; 2) changes in demand for SSB products when prices increase (elasticity); 3) changes in demand for SSB products based on demographic characteristics; and 4) mineral water as a substitute for SSB products.
